Walter Shriefels deserves to be huge.
One of the most hardworking people in the emo/hardcore scene, Walter has a habit of forming incredibly talented bands like Gorrilla Biscuits, Quicksand, World's Fastest Car, and Rival Schools, only to fold these groups just when it looks like they're going to break through and take over the world.
A Walking Concert is much more poppier than Walter's previous efforts: think Beck, The Kinks, Bowie, Flaming Lips. This album isn't what we'd expect from the ex-frontman of one of the heaviest post-hardcore bands, but anyone who knows Walter's bands will realise that his releases have been getting progressively more melodic and 'poppy'.

Hot on the heels of "Strange Pleasures" (the second 3 CD Decca/Deram box set of late 60's/early 70's underground sounds) Universal Music has again let Esoteric Records boss Mark Powell loose in its vaults. After issuing similar box sets of Vertigo material and the aforementioned Decca/Derams, Mark (teamed again with maestro Paschal Byrne at the mixing desk and the highly creative Phil Smee in the design room) has produced another excellent offering. As with the aforementioned releases, the packaging is first rate. The 3 cds come in their own mini fake aged LP sleeves accompanied by an informative 48 page booklet with a section per artiste and plenty of rare photos/original album covers. In his introduction, Powell also gives a history of the ... Read More:

For many years now I've thought that Carol Laula could be Scotland's finest singer / songwriter. This album while not containing very much of her songwriting talents confirms that she probably the best ever from this country. Finer even than Karen Mathieson of Capercaillie. I'm listening to the album now and I'm thinking Joni Mitchell amongst others but I would rather listen to this. A fine opening track in Iris, Martin Stephenson joins Carol on Crocodile Cryer and there is a stupendous version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Every track has something and yes your right I think it is excellant, as are all her other albums.
