Intensified!: Original Ska 1962-1966 [CASSETTE]Search: James Bond - Roland Alphonso by: Various Artists Release Date June 15, 1990 An album of chugging, bubbling, burbling rhythms, from Derrick & Patsy's "Housewifes Choice" of 1962 to Roland Alphonso's "James Bond" of 1966. Mostly instrumental tracks (some with chants) are balanced by lovely vocal numbers like "Carry Go Bring Home" by The Charms. With its rousing sax and soulful vocals, "John + James" by The Maytals, and the lilting, anthemic "We Are Rolling" by Stranger Cole are my favourites. This album proves that Jamaican music has a vast treasure trove of early gems and offers much more than just reggae which is the most familiar and popular form. |

But at the price it is well worth the money, because there are loads of great tunes. In fact it is worth the cash just to get a copy of 'Rukumbine'. There is a groovy ska version of the James Bond theme, and a couple of minor key instrumental grooves that really get you dancing. Also 'A little oil in my lamp' is a great singalong ska version of a traditional song, with a gospel feel to it. I don't know why they chose to start the CD with the Prince Buster tune which is more of a reggae style and not like the rest at all (although it's not a bad tune). |
