Protection was never really gonna compete with its predecessor (Blue Lines) and for most, its a case of, "oh, not another remix album". but they truly are good. When you can still pick out the blistering beats and power packed emotion of the tunes, and still find them nothing short of amazing, you realise Massive have created a legendary album, again!

I remember well the period of the early nineties - and the sounds that were in my life then. Much of my leisure time was spent clubbing: fast-paced, loud, excitable and generally full-on. It was a good time and the music I heard when I was out was fantastic. But I often felt some "humanity" was missing. During those 'down times' I'd drop Protection onto my record player and slide back into a feeling of warmth, honesty and embracing lyrics. "Lyrics!" I thought, that's what's was missing! What was the point otherwise? It was simply music only of the 'thrill factor'. Of course I listened to other classics that my collection contained, but this was the sound at the time. And Massive Attack had seemed to tap into the zeitgeist.

It's all very well to have such a vast array of remixes of so many superb Massive Attack singles, but it doesn't make for easy listening from start to finish. But then the dictionary doesn't make for a good read and that is how best to treat this collection; as an important reference point. Only a precious few mixes of the originals come even close in quality to the album versions. So if you are already a massive Massive Attack fan you probably own most of the singles already. And if you are fairly new to the band then do not buy this before you own the albums. That leaves this box set in no mans land really. Me...well I saw it in a second hand CD shop so parted with money to taste the Unfinished Sympathy mixes in particular. Owning and loving all the LP's I ... Read More:

A lot of love and thought has been put into this soundtrack - it sets a perfect laid back mood.
It spans hip-hop (Method Man), classical (David Darling), trip-hop (Massive Attack), drum and bass (EBTG), ambient (Bang Bang), jazz (Miles Davis), dance (God Within) and more. The feeling of warmth it generates on every listen is very special indeed and I have not met a person who is not impressed by the whole collection, which is quite a rare thing.
If you're familiar with even just one artist featured on this CD, I recommend buying it. You will not be disappointed by the other featured tracks. A definite labour of love.
I haven't seen the film 187, but I don't really want to after listening to this soundtrack - I'm afraid it might ... Read More:

This compilation is very much a game of two halves. On disc 1 "alpine chills" you get a decent selection of relaxed stuff which comprises of the more charty Fatboy Slim, Moby - to the chilled perennials - kinobe, zero 7, groove armada, lemon jelly, nightmares on wax - and a few unexpected gems - like Only Child, Space Raiders and Jaffa. Overall it has it's highs and its lows - but a great slection none the less. My only quibble is the way its been mixed - fading into each other- which isn't a creative use of the songs, and isn't really necessary.
The second disc is a more full on break beat mix with some good quality tracks. It does get a bit samey though- and I did get a bit bored 2/3rds of the way in. But if you're a hardcore fan of this ... Read More:

As with all music its a very strong matter of personal taste, if you like massive attack you won't neccesarily enjoy this. I love it, but it took me a year before I actually enjoyed it and now is one of my most played album. Great for zoning out and getting lost...

I don't normally go for "Best Ofs" or "Collections" but I felt this was an exception. The whole package is superbly produced and contains all you need for a look back at MA's history. They are a truely creative and influential band and just so different from anything else that has been.
The first disc has some old favourites, my personal ones being Unfinished Sympathy, Butterfly Caught, Teardrop and Protection.
The 2nd disc was more hit and miss for me, but I have to make a special mention for I Against I, a collaboration with Mos Def, whom I like very much as an artist in his own right. I first heard the track on an UNKLE CD (Edit Music for a Film) and was instantly gripped by it's pulsating beat.
