Tangents 1973 - 1983Search: Kiew Mission by: Tangerine Dream Release Date January 19, 2004 I can't decide whether Edgar Froese is basically insecure, a total perfectionist or just plain cavalier when it comes to revisiting the past achievements of Tangerine Dream. Perhaps it's a mix of all three? The "Tangents" boxed set of 5 CDs certainly demonstrates something of all of these attitudes. The music on these disks is drawn from the period 1973-83, during which time Tangerine Dream were signed to Virgin Records. The set ignores only "Cyclone" of the 12 principal TD Virgin releases and incorporates a single passing nod to "Pergamon" (CDs 1-3). It also covers the main OST releases of the Virgin Years, "Sorcerer (1977 Film)", "Risky Business", "Thief", "Firestarter", "Wavelength" and "Flashpoint" (CD 4). The final CD presents ... Exit (Remastered)Search: Kiew Mission by: Tangerine Dream Release Date August 07, 1995 'Exit' showed Tangerine Dream moving away temporarily from huge twenty minute pieces, and instead recording shorter, more palletable tracks. This was arguably, a move that the band had to make in order to survive in the early 1980s. As a result, 'Exit' is an album full of variety. Opening track 'Kiev Mission' is one of the group's most enduring pieces. Split into two fairly moody sections, the first section works far better, and actually benefits from some haunting female vocals. It makes you wonder how much more successful the 'Cyclone' album would have been if the band had used the same vocal approach on display here. It's really quite effective. Dream Sequence: the Best of Tangerine DreamSearch: Kiew Mission by: Tangerine Dream Release Date July 01, 1996 This 2 CD set contains a fair representation of almost all of the Tangerine Dream albums recorded in the period 1973 to 1983 (the only ones missing are "Sorcerer", "Pergamon" and "Cyclone"). While it is not always the best track from each album that makes it into this set, and some are presented in bleeding chunk form only, these discs do give the listener a good overview of each album, making this a good sampler set from which to set out on an exploration of the music of Tangerine Dream's so-called Virgin Years. I don't usually approve of 'best of' collections, and usually rate them accordingly, but I'm prepared to make an exception in this case because of the completeness, variety of programming and value for money demonstrated ... . Dream Sequence: the Best of Tangerine DreamSearch: Kiew Mission by: Tangerine Dream Release Date May 15, 2000 Perhaps I should have said "Most Consistant Years" of this band. I bought this originally years ago for two tracks only - "Love On A Real Train" and "The Dream Is Always The Same". These two discs have since served well subsequently in the car. Not sure if the mastering is from the "Definitive" work done in the nineties, or whether it's just the original that's been repackaged, but WELL WORTH IT as an introduction to their "classic" years with Virgin. |

. Tangents 1973-1983Search: Kiew Mission by: Tangerine Dream Release Date January 19, 2004 If this was a basic, untouched, compilation of ORIGINAL tracks, I'd rate it 5 stars plus. The problem is, the recordings have been tinkered with, adding additional layers (with a VERY broad brush) and possibly even re-recording some bits. Not my cup of tea, although some newer fans rather like the different feel given to established favourites, so I'd best leave it at that... |
