Paolo Conte began as a songwriter for other people, then graduated to performing his music himself. For me, part of his charm has always been his rough, cigarette-scarred vocals. Unfortunately, on this album, most of the songs are sung by others, although Paolo continues to play piano. Unfortunately, he just doesn't manage to conjure up the atmosphere of a late-night piano bar this time around. The songs are pleasant-enough forties-kind-of-jazz tunes, sung by good-enough singers, but the charisma of the pianist/songwriter is lacking.
And this is from someone who was eagerly awaiting this artist's next album. Get one of his live albums or the excellent 900 instead.

The first few tracks are the heart and soul of this album. "I'm All Right" the first, is probably the best. "Summer Wind" is a sweet ballad - rock steady beat with gentle softly swooping vocals - very nice. "Blue Alert" - this is a good number that bops along nicely but Peyroux's vocals lack the edge and attack that would have made it something special. Still - it grows on you.
"Everybodys Talkin" is just an incredibly dull rendition of a clasic song. Truly dreadful.
There isn't much to say about the rest of the album only two other tracks are worthy of note: "Little Bit" co-written by Peyroux is a pretty good number - I hope to hear more of her own material on future albums.

Serge Gainsbourg is criminally underrated outside France. Listening to this comprehensive best of compilation it is evident that there was more to him than the sleazy Gallic rogue that is stereotypically presented in the media. By contrast, `Initials S.G.' reveals Gainsbourg to be a restless sonic innovator. While his lackadaisical, half-spoken vocal style may be limited, Gainsbourg's compositions are original and prescient. Many of his songs are based around carefully constructed loops of sound that suggest his popularity amongst pioneers of hip hop and breakbeat. I used to think MC Solar's `Nouvelle Westerne' was more layered in its use of samples but is in fact lifted almost in entirety from `Bonnie And Clyde' - already a hypnotically repetitive ... What can't this talented actress-musician do? September 18, 2003 Jane Birkin is a bundle of talent wrapped up in a stylish package. She's been hot on the model circuit, had a fun role as the villainess in the amusing Agatha Christie film "Evil under the Sun" as well as being the ingenue in the cult 60's film "Blow Up." Birkin married musician and composer Serge Gainsbourg and had a hit European single "Je t'aime, Moi non plus.
Sadly, Gainsbourg died in 1991. As a tribute to her late husband, Birkin has released "Arabesque." The North African-Arabic sound is intriguing, hypnotic and pleasantly mixed with French sensibility. My favorite, next to Le Javanaise (because I like that type of rhythm) on the album was "Baby alone in Babylone" with its brusque ... Read More:
