What was being called Soul Music in the 90s was sometimes not called that at the time.The word possibly originated from the title of a Ray Charles LP called Genius plus Soul equals Jazz.
However black music by the 60s had begun to pick up the habits of whites as they filled their music with banks of strings and the singers wrote songs pretending to be kids! Eg Sam Cooke.
A lot of black music stood up as high school pop-like Jimmy Jones who emerged from a Gospel quartet.
And here we have one Kenny Lynch.A black man born in London and really a Cockney who kicked off his career on EMI by covering American hits by the Drifters and Harold Dorman.In 1963 he became the first artist to cover a Lennon-McCartney song!
