Scrapper Blackwell is not one of the 'major' names as a solo blues artist, but he's certainly one of the best as this recording that was made toward the end of a long career clearly shows. His acoustic guitar style is very percussive, being quite brutal at times, and is very different to that of many country guitar players. But he's not really a country blues man at all, because there's a strong 'urban' feel to his music. It's a sort of country style, shifted into the city, and because of that it's much more accessible to a modern audience than (for example) Robert Johnson's material. The vocals are good. Release Date March 06, 2006
I love Muddy, and bought this so that I might have all of the early stuff in one place. The first three CDs are great, and sound to my ears as good as the "official" Chess releases. However, the last CD is, apart from most of the best known tracks, very harsh sounding to my ears (and to be honest, unlistenable as a result). Baby Please Don't Go is definitely the same performance as that available on the Chess reissues, but it sounds **** here. Still, at the price, a good way to obtain the pre-Chess and early Chess sides.
