I first found Medeski, Martin and Wood through their wonderful recent collaborations with guitarist John Scofield (check out the superb "Out Louder" and equally awesome "A Go Go"), and I have since bought the majority of their albums - I have yet to find a dud. This is assuredly NOT easy listening, with harmonic and melodic freedom enjoyed to the full at times, but they groove like no-one else, and conjure moods effortlessly. Last Chance to Dance Trance (Perhaps): the Best of 1991-1996Search: Lively Up Yourself by: Medeski Martin & Wood Release Date October 18, 1999 This was the first MMW CD I bought and it was an impulse purchase based on a distant listening whilst between sets at a gig. If you're after a hard sounding version of those late 60's Blue Note bands, this is the one to go for. They play out whilst staying in and keep the groove firmly in the pocket. Very expressive, funky, hard as nails and full of humour. Buy this then check out John Scofield's "A Go Go" which they play on. Also, in a more soulful vein, Soulive's "Turn it Out" (live) is heavy as hell. |
