Well, that last review pretty much covers what I had to say about the bonus material, so I'm not really going to hit upon that although my final star rating will take that into account. What I want to talk about is the original album, which is of course, magnificent. Only 4 tracks stand out immediately as classics, those being the brilliant and insistently pounding title track, the dub reggae rallying call "Guns of Brixton", the singalong "Spanish Bombs", and the also reggae tinged "Rudie Can't Fail". The rest of the tracks cover traditional styles of rock n roll from the 50s onwards, but do it in terrific style - the kind of style that satisfies AFTER the first listen, and keeps you coming back for more. Tribute albums can be hit-or-miss affairs, but this is magnificent achievement especially considering these are largely unknown or peripheral artists. The only major acts on here are Amy Rigby, the Smithereens, Camper van Beethoven, Willie Nile,Wreckless Eric, Matthew Ryan, Mekons, and Steve Wynn. While I agree that there may be more comprehensive Clash sets available (my personal favourite being 'The Story Of The Clash Volume 1') this release does exactly what it says on the tin. All the singles, though not in chronological order - unlike the previous 1991 version, combined with far improved artwork. And it is this that sold me on this CD.
The colourful booklet has been designed with care and features notes from the great and good on each track. Everybody from Pete Townsend to Danny Boyle and many inbetween, get to comment on their favourites and the impact these tracks had on them. Single sleeve artwork and illustrations adorn the liner notes together with some fine shots of the band. All in a slip-sleeved jewel case. And for once, no grammatical ... Read More:
