First off, its great to be able to get a two-for-one pack of one of the stars of Atlantic records. Motown UK have been doing this for the last few years, recently releasing the Gladys Knight and the Pips albums. As far as I am aware these two albums are not available on cd with their original track listing, so here is a chance to hear the albums as they were meant to be heard. Also, unlike many of the Motown two-fers, these albums complement each other very well as they were released in the same year and there is very little filler here at all. There is also enough variety to warrant wanting to listen to both albums- and even the cover versions are done well enough to be worthy of any record collection. There are a number of tracks which are ... Read More:

Although only a short album in length, this is brilliant southern soul. From the vitality of the title track to the brooding, emotional I'm a Lonely Stranger, Arthur Conley presents some truly fantastic music. Arthur Conley was discovered by the great Otis Redding and this debut album was in fact produced by Otis and featured some Otis tracks. There is not a bad song on this album and all soul fans should have it in their collection. Stand out tracks include There's a Place For Us, the pop-soul of I'm Gonna Forget About You and the anthemic Sweet Soul Music.

I didn't think it would be possible for Mr Godin to match let alone improve on the brilliance of Volume 3, but incredibly he's done it again and surpassed his previous releases. Everything here sits so well together,an absolute joy from track 1 to track 25.
Gems such as My Baby by Garnett Mimms and The day after Forever by Paul Kelly are personal favourites, but that does not detract from the quality of product here.
One thing puzzles though: why on earth was 'You Make Me Feel Good'by Lawrence & Jaibi shelved in 1970? What a stunner!.
The usual great liner notes are here, including a marvellous soul epiphany from Kevin McCardle.

"Paths Of Victory", released toward the end of 1964(there is still some debate over it's EXACT release date), remains a stunning work of the Folk genre, and a MUST for any serious collector of Folk music. Several factors propel it to this lofty position, but three factors in particular come into play.
First:no less than SEVEN of the record's thirteen songs were written by Bob Dylan. Though Dylan was already THE hottest singer-songwriter in Folk(generating numerous cover versions of his songs)it was(and STILL remains)a novel idea to stuff MORE than half an album full of Dylan interpretations. Furthermore, six of the seven had yet to be released on Dylan's OWN albums(on Columbia)when they made their appearance HERE(to this ... Read More:

I don't know who is reading this or why. Possibly someone relatively new to the Blues and finding their way through the densely packed forest of Blues cds. Well then, stick with me kid because you've just discovered pure gold.
To be brutally honest, good old Otis Hicks (his real name) is not one of the major talents in the Blues. His songs are often thinly disguised reworkings of other people's. His guitar playing is rudimentary at best. The accompaniment tends to be sparse (usually just drums/percussion and harp). It's about as basic electric Blues as you can get.
But oh that voice. That grainy world weary seen it all and it wuz crap voice which nevertheless winks at you with dry humour not far away.
