Promoted as an inspirational CD, Ronan Tynan's "The Dawning of the Day" truly reflects this definition. Although he recorded several religious songs that are inspiring, three songs tell stories of different journeys.

"Mia Dolorosa" lets you experience Christ's journey to Calvary. Through Ronan's magnificent voice, you experience both the hatred and sorrow of Good Friday.

With "Go Rest High on That Mountain", you not only experience the love between a Father and his son, but the sorrow of death.

Rutter: Requiem

Having listened to and sung Rutter's Requiem it has a firm place in my heart. The Requiem is more complex than Rutter's shorter choral anthems and takes you on a journey from darkness to light. At the moments when the music changes from minor to major key you can almost see the light break through the clouds - breathtaking!

Vaughan Williams: Pilgrim's Progress

I had the privilege of working backstage during the 1954 Cambridge production of Pilgrim's Progress at the city's Guldhall and also had the pleasure of meeting the grand old man himself, when Vaughan Williams and his wife attended a performance and came backstage.
I found the performance of that work completely overwhelming and a fully emotional experience. The sequence when Pilgrim meets Mr. By-Ends is very Puccini-esque and the "Lord is My shepherd" sequence is quite sublime. The Entrance into Heaven completely surpasses Handel's Hallelujah Chorus and is most moving. I have worn out my three disc LP set over the years. The CD re-issue of this recording is highly recommended.

Gloria: The Sacred Music of John Rutter

This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter. The Gloria is Rutter's version of a standard piece of liturgical music, representing influences ancient and modern. This was recorded at in 1984, with the City of London Sinfonia and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble collaborating.

The Gloria is a piece in three movements. The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble performs with the Cambridge Singers and soloists Mary Seers, Mary Hitch, and Caroline Ashton. This includes organ music and timpani/percussion. The Gloria is one of Rutter's earliest works, written as a commissioned piece for an American group (Voices of Mel Olson, Omaha, Nebraska). To hear traditional psalms and anthems sung with imagination and near-perfect intonation and ensemble, you may not think to buy a disc of a Canadian choir - but, believe me, once heard, this beautiful record from the St John's Choir from Elora will hardly be off your CD player.

Most of the chants here are well-known, but we are used to hearing them sung by English cathedral choirs made up of men and boys. The St John's Choir comprises men and women (mostly young-sounding University students), and I should say 4 or 5 voices to a part.
