Bar none this is the best CD of female country singers. Ranging from the classics such as Dolly and Tammy it also features under-rated yet fantastic singers such as Martina McBride and Shelby Lynne. Both CD's are packed full with well remembered hits from all decades, so there something here for every country fan.
The only problem with this album is that the producers of the album could have replaced artists such as Stevie Nicks and Maria McKee with 'proper' country females such as Faith Hill, Trisha Yearwood or LeAnn Rimes. However this is a class album and should be heard by everyone who loves a honkytonk.

From the insane frat garage feedback of Vixens In Space to the fuzz-funk of Granny's Little Chicken via the Black Flag-esque stylings of Burnt to Cinders, this is a very bizarre album. Most of the tracks are penned by frontman, Mick Collins as compared to Ultraglide in Black which was almost all covers. There are a coupla duds on here, most notably My Heart Burns With Deeps of Lurve, but most tracks are listenable. Very fuzzy, very lo-fi.

Most of these songs are classics from the sixties and seventies (though there are a few older and a few of more recent vintage) that have been released many times before on various compilations. Long-standing country fans surely have most of these songs already and have no reason to buy this unless they like the particular mix of songs presented here. This collection's main appeal is to those just starting a record collection or just discovering country music. At any given time, there are always plenty of such people around so this album, like others of its type down the years, will sell in reasonable quantities.

the influences of the 50's and 60's has what got me into the hard rock so this compilation even though its tinged with the sweetness and innocence of pre beatles pop is a gem since i must be one of the few (22 years old) to listen to it since it contains tracks from the beach boys to the animals which i love and most rock stars like Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilminster cite there influences that got them where they are now so im proud to be of that company that loves music as way back as it was back then which is nothing to be ashamed of thats why i give this compilation 5/5

Having sold quite a few of the original compilation, the Virgin team have again helped themselves to parent EMI's vast back catalogue, and borrowed a few from elsewhere, to give us a further helping of the cute, the tearful and the over-all easy classic recordings that graced the British popular music charts before the coming of the Beatles et al.
As before, the emphasis is on the period 1955-1963, and really reflects the material that was regularly played on BBC's Light Programme at the time; solo singers' ballads, novelty songs, the odd instrumental or big band number, but definitely nothing so raunchy as pop or rock and roll - even the American representatives here are either the great crooners or the fluffy young spotty teenagers, ...
