Georgy Sviridov - Choral Music

Search: Magpie
from: Olympia

Release Date January 17, 2000
Like many listeners I suspect, I was introduced to Sviridov by Hvorostovsky's rendering of the 'Russia Adrift' song cycle. Unfortunately out of print, though a mezzo version on Opus111 is equally well recorded and documented. Hvorostovsky's recording of the St Petersburg cycle is now available on Delos.

I have to start by saying that the recording of Pushkin's Garland (1980) [30'20] on this disc doesn't match the glossier DG recording on "Russian Voices" recital led by Vladimir Minin. And the DG set includes Russian lyrics not just English translations as here. Still it's good to have incidental music to Tsar Feodor Ivannovich (1972) and versions of two choral cycles to words by Blok: Songs of Troubled Times (1980) and Night Clouds ... Read More:

Janácek: Glagolitic Mass

by: JANACEK

Release Date September 19, 2003
Janacek's music is extremely post-stravinskian with yet a constant reference to an old Slavonic tradition. The introduction is powerfully dominated by the wind instruments but is kind of dubitative, suspended, sad even, unsure for sure. The Kyrie reestablishes vibrant optimism. The soprano takes us into this mood and when the Gloria comes, neurotic, escaping an invisible and un-understandable danger, when it turns into a chase or maybe a procession rhythmically pushed forward by percussions and strings, we try to forget the choir that sounds more menacing than the solace of a great mass of helpful souls. The Credo then explodes like a confrontation to the impossible conquest of the faith and fate a Christian would like to have and control. In ... Read More:
