This is a wonderful audio realization of Don Giovanni. Samuel Ramey is the quintessential Don, with his exquisite voice and fine acting ability. Ferruccio Furlanetto is a delight as Leporello. Furlanetto is one of the finest actors in opera today.

Well, I was curious! how could the Don fit on a two c.d set? sadly it was performed at break-neck speed, the poor singers sounded exhausted before they where half-way through the first scene. I awarded the stars for shear guts to them, although I do wish the conductor was a bit more musical or,at least considerate. Well, now I need to lie down.

Don Giovanni is an opera not easily placed into any of the established categories: although there are a number of comic scenes, the impact both of the attempted rape and murder in the first few minutes does hang over the rest of the opera until the terrible moment of reckoning in the penultimate scene. No more however can it be described as a tragedy. It is therefore a very difficult opera to perform, as the characters don't have the same degree of certainty as to their role that they do in other operas.
In terms of the cast, among the major parts, Renee Flemming is the best. Donna Anna is a hard part to sing, as the role demands dramatic elements in her first big aria "Or sai chi l'onore", and more lyrical elements ... Read More:

John Eliot Gardner is one of the greatest conductors of our age. His Beethoven symphonies are probably the greatest recordings of those pieces ever made. His Mozart is no less impressive. Crisp, exciting and occasionally frightening, there are also some beautifully tender moments and the sound quality is top notch. The orchestra are at their usual high standard and, to my ears at least, the singers are all excellent. Highly recommended.

This recording of "Don Giovanni" has for years been a benchmark to rank with the Karajan/Schwarzkopf "Rosenkavalier" or any Callas "Norma." Note that none of these great recordings has been without detractors, but the fact remains that they are to be reckoned seriously in any comparison of performance quality.
I find myself appalled at the casual, hoity-toity dismissal by your professional reviewer of an ensemble of singers, the like of which is not be found today in all the world. The back-of-the-hand to Siepi merely because he is a bass demonstrates a lack of familiarity with long-established performing traditions. Yes, Brownlee, a baritone, was an excellent Don Giovanni, but Pinza, a bass, was a better one. The airy sniffs ... Read More:
