With 1980's adventurous More Specials the Coventry band overcame the 'difficult second album syndrome', a fate which has befallen many an artist over the years. They did this by broadening their musical palette; where their classic debut (effectively) embraces the ska and reggae of Prince Buster, The Skatalites and Toots and The Maytals, this album sees them venturing into a wider variety of genres, including northern soul (`Sock It To `Em J.B.'), spaghetti westerns soundtracks (`Stereotypes') and easy listening (`Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)'). How you can describe a collection as `Best of The Specials' when it doesn't contain their second number one single `Ghost Town' and that their first number one single `Too Much Too Young' be the tamer album version rather than the version from the live EP which topped the charts.

Other omissions would be the debut single `Gangsters' and both singles from the second album. That the sleeve notes cannot bear to use the titles of either `Gangsters' or `Ghost Town' in telling the history of the group show us a disrespect of the past of Stalin-esque proportions.

The album does contain three b-sides and seven album only tracks and does give a broad introduction to the fantastic work of the Specials but such a misleading title does nothing ... Read More:

`Dance Craze' is the best visual document of the Two-Tone movement featuring live performances from the six bands central to the original cult of British Ska: The Specials; Madness; The Selecter; The Beat; The Bodysnatchers and Bad Manners. The film was the brainchild of American director Joe Massot whom caught a clip of Madness on TV. On learning of The Specials he sought to create a film to catch the zeitgeist that had currently tuned England Black and White rather than Red and White.

The film did modest business drawing an audience of fans, like myself, not old enough to go to the concerts. And so we skanked in the aisles of the picture house's as if we were in a dance hall. The Soundtrack was consequently a huge success, with the Two-Tone badge ... Read More:
