The "rarity" value of some of these tracks is academic, as they are more or less carbon copies of the versions already available on the original albums. The tracks I`m referring to are Steeleye Span`s Thomas the Rhymer(the BGO issue of Now We Are Six also contains an "album version" of Thomas the Rhymer), Elf Call, Gaudete, Lanercost, Rave On. A couple of the Maddy Prior(& Rick Kemp) tracks, Fire on the Line & Somewhere Along the Road, are already all too familiar, too.
BOAR`S HEAD CAROL, a single from the 1977 line-up that recorded the albums Storm Force Ten and Live At Last, is a real tour de force, and this track(along with a couple of the live recordings)makes this CD worth the price of admission for me. Another ... Read More:

Joe Harriott, Ian Carr, Don Rendell, Michael Garrick, these are some of the cream of British jazz. It is a scandal, particularly in this on-ilne Amazon and I-tunes age, that so little of this stuff is available. One just has to compare Stan Tracey's discography with what is actually available to see that there is a whole world of brilliant British jazz that is locked away and should be out there.
I personally quite like the poetry here although I do think that the poetic introductions and links on BBC TVs attempt to revive jazz on television afew years back was the reason that it failed, That programme out Jazz Clubbed the Fast Show despite some excellent performances.
There is so much good stuff in here; it is a delight, don't ... Read More:

This is jazz-poetry on a stick. It is a real pleasure to hear this band play live (all too rare) - but here is all the inventiveness of a class act captured on CD... And, as with all Michael Garrick's productions this is an eclectic mix of stuff from the 'world music' ('orrible phrase) lyricism of 'Black Marigolds' to the very particular take on the Duke's 'Cotton Tail'.
The thing with this band is that they play like they are enjoying a rollicking good time - at home with the fact of their talent (rather than writing an oh-so-self-conscious-moderne-musik manifesto)...and the pleasure is infectious. This is not to say that this music is devoid of serious intent or sits on its historical laurels... Oh, no - just listen to Paul Moylan's 'Trials and Tribs' or ... Read More:

just as i get round to collect this lot on vinyl vis a vis ebay etc, gilles does the business on cd, and why not a true democratisation of taste and rewriting of history, gilles has the knowledge and now the power and glory ! can't wait to see your australian jazz journies.

Nice One Gilles!. Returning to the routes of his Jazz FM & Radio London days Gilles picks out some stunning British Jazz tracks. All of which are current vinyl collectors rareities. The outstanding one for me being "Black Marigolds" from the rare Carr/Rendell Phase 3 LP. This track written by Michael Garrick is worth the purchase price alone. treat Yourself to this Ltd edition CD. The Vinyl edition has a bonus track by the Mike Westbrook concert band "Original Peter" another corker of a track. Thanks Gilles

I was living in Birmingham in 1972 and bought a vinyl album from the bargain bins. There was no cover, just the album.Bill Fay... never heard of him, but for five bob I decided to give it a go.One hundred plays later and I still had not tired of it.
As so often in life, things slide and the record was lost, as was the memory, until recently I googled the half remembered name and the CD, remastered currently sits in my CD player.
It is as current and modern now as then.
I am reminded of Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker, but believe me this is an original. Forget about any biblical references, this is one superb album.
Anyone who likes intelligent singer songwriting should own this. Haunting, disturbing, melodic, poetic, BRILLIANT!
