Their subsequent albums lacked all those glorious rough spots, I think, but maybe I'm wrong. This album has all those elements that have become their trademark sound. I used to describe Monster Magnet in this way: Monster Magnet are to metal, what The Butthole Surfers are to punk-rock. Both bands rely heavier on psychedelia, than anything else. Imagine Pink Floyd in Pompeii while Mt. Vesuvius explodes and vomits lava all over the place. I saw Monster Magnet about 6 or 7 years ago in a tiny smoke filled club. When i heard snippets of this album in a certain large music store, it gave me the impression that this was an album i must have...so i bought it. Needless to say i was slightly disappointed....a good album, dont get me wrong but very average and not many uplifting or recognisable tracks from the past or present. Some good rollers but i expected better from 3 of my favourite DJs...

Scratch Vol.1

Search: Mastermind
by: Various Artists

Release Date April 16, 2001
If you buy one hip hop album this year make it this one! From the mellow, jazzy sounds of A Tribe Called Quest's "Lyrics" to the super funky dancefloor filler "Positive Life" by Lovebug Starski, the quality of tunes on this album starts off great and keeps getting better. While 'Scratch Vol 1' might not appeal to the fans of so called commercial 'Hip Hop'(Puff Daddy et al), anyone who is interested in real Hip Hop will appreciate the depth of quality and variety of this suberb album.
