Yet another great double CD box set in the classical album series! Containing all the best new versions of classical tracks, including Only Men Aloud, Bryn Terfel and Russel Watson to name but a few. I certainly don't feel anyone could go wrong buying this compilation!

There are so many classical music compilations which claim to `relax' the listener that it becomes either daunting for the newcomer to know which to buy, or repetitive to others who have already purchased several such collections. There's no answer to which is best, for they all have their merits, some being better quality performances, others offer a better selection of music, and others may just be great value for money.

The Classic FM series of CD releases - and they are growing in number - generally offer a little of all these attributes, and are increasingly becoming the first choice of classical music compilation for many people.

This is a superb collection of classical tracks that have been mixed and updated by a wide range of artists. There is still enough here to please the traditionalist, but it is different and modern enough to entertain the younger generation too!

Compared to last years album I too was a little disappointed with this offering; there appeared to be little thought that went into the packaging and presentation booklet and I felt the rep selection was a little weak. There were performances from the usual greats; the superb Che gelida manina from Pavarotti, Bjorlings wonderful Amor ti Vieta, Netrebko's Song to the Moon all stood out but nothing really here that hasn't appeared on other compellations. As for the new batch; Russell Watson's Pearl Fishers Duet (duetting with himself) is very poor, as is his pronunciation, Katherine Jenkins transposing Un Bel Di which sounds way too difficult for her and since when has Santa Lucia (Nicky Spence) and Caruso (Jon Christos - a truly beautiful voice ... This regular, annual series has become the classical equivalent of pop's Now compilations, and for many, no doubt, just as eagerly awaited. It works both as general easy listening or background music and also as a sampler of the recent light, popular classical CD releases from the Universal and Sony BMG labels.

There is, of course, nothing remotely serious in the collection - even the more Establishment performers such as Bryn Terfel, Kiri te Kanawa and Placido Domingo serve up lollipops. You could say that many of the songs featured are over-exposed - if you buy six albums of this type it is perfectly possible to end up with six versions of Nessun Dorma and O Sole Mio - but then it just reflects what most people love to hear.
