This is a box set of the Mahler cycle Sinopoli recorded for DG with the Philharmonia back in the 1980's (at about the same time that Maazel was recording his cycle with the VPO).

Production values are high - the set is well-recorded and generally well-played/sung (though rehersal times were reputedly quite tight). Sinopoli was a unique conductor, he would often take an 'independent' line, and his recordings, at their best, quite often bring out details that others don't. Never as 'passionate' as Bernstein or Inbal (or indeed Abbado in later years), never as 'reserved' as Bertini, Sinopoli produced Mahler that could still be revealing and intellectual.
