I had the bitersweet experience of seeing Ben & Jason's farewell gig at the Jazz cafe, where they performed the best songs from all four of their albums, including the latest and last, appropriately named Goodbye. I hadn't had much of a chance to digest Goodbye before the gig, but have since been listening to it over and over again, re-living the spine-chilling moments of acoustic bliss. Standout tracks on this album are 'You're the Reason' and 'When to Laugh' which remind me of why I fell in love with (and to) Ben and Jason in the first place.

There has been much comment on what makes a modern opera, and if this particular work fulfils the 'Opera' criteria. This is a fantastic way for many to approach opera, and it has just finished it's second Glyndebourne run. This recording is first rate and greatly benefits from the live performance. The countertenor singing of Chris Robson is 'alien' as this role intends and at times extremely touching. The controller role is a tour de force, and sung with ease by Clarron McFaddon. She scales a sonic f with ease! Nualla Willis is splendid and at times her sound is confused with Mr Robsons, further displaying that she also is an outsider. The relationship of Tina and Bill (Mary Plazas & Coxon) is beautifully sung and realised. Plazas's singing canopies ... Read More:

Not one of the best compilations out there, it starts with the sad cover and not even a Stevie Wonder and Levi Stubbs duet can save it.
Good inner notes by compiler Jo Wallace giving info on artists and tracks.
Highlights for me Tommy Goods northern stomper Baby I miss you, and the Four Tops Where did you go which is also available on Motown Connoisseurs (a far better buy in my opinion), and Junior Walkers What does it take.
This is a CD for avid collectors and for some of the more obscure tracks hence a rating of 3 stars.

Smokey Robinson was once described by Bob Dylan as "the greatest living poet". That is certainly nothing of an understatement and Smokey Robinson was one of the most richly talented singer/songwriter/producers at Tamla Motown Records.
Smokey Robinson gave Berry Gordy the initial ammunition for forming Tamla Motown Records and was also partly responsible for bringing the great Diana Ross to his attention, who was a close friend of Smokey's and indeed Smokey ended up having a short-lived affair with Diana, even though he was married to Claudette Robinson at the time. Berry Gordy expressed an interest in one of his songs and before long, a creative bond was forged that would change the face of music between blacks and whites.

I have despaired for years at the proliferation of mono Motown CD re-issues when these days even the humblest CD/radio player has two built-in speakers and a stereo jack. Therefore I am delighted to see that this 72-track collection is one hundred per cent stereo. Furthermore, thirty of the tracks are brand new stereo mixes, a labour of love for Tom Moulton, who has really brought out the best in these songs and the Funk Brothers' unparalleled playing while retaining the feel of the mono originals. I especially relished those in previously unheard full-length mixes. Several of the previously released titles are still relatively hard to find, though of course this still leaves the set more attractive to newcomers to Motown, as long-term fans are likely to have most of the ...
