This time it's good to see some less well-known pieces keep company with the favourites. However, there is still a good helping of pieces which everyone used to know but few could name. Who remembers Ronald Binge's Miss Melanie as a TV sig tune in the 50s? Or programmes like Housewives' Choice or My Word? It's good to see a nod towards our own time too with the inclusion of the waltz which was used in the film Titanic. Keep buying!

Binge - Orchestral Works

Having bought a number of the Marco Polo British Light Music series and been pleased with all of them, this is one of the best. A number of the composer's best known works are included but, for me, the best part of the CD is the works that I did not know. In particular the Saxophone Concerto, Second Movement is a real 'find'. Thoroughly recommended CD, fine recording, delightful music. If you know and like Elizabethan Serenade, String Song and Sailing By then you'll love the rest.

It's not surprising that the revival of interest in British Light Music that accompanied the series of Marco Polo anthologies in the 1990s should have led EMI and others to reissue parts of their back catalogue of the genre. This is a compilation of some of the plums from several collections recorded at intervals between 1955 and 1970. The remastering has been done with the utmost care and certainly freshens the presentation of the music. Throughout one is delighted by the affection, vitality and, where appropriate, humour injected into these wonderful little pieces. Sailing By - The Music of Ronald Binge

I only originally bought this album because I wanted a copy of the track 'Sailing By' which is used for Radio 4's Shipping Forecast and was fed up of satying up until 12.50 am to listen to it. I had not listened to any of the other tracks. This album is a good chill out album for anyone who likes light classical music. The first CD includes two symphonies by Binge and the second is lighter, more jazzy music. I would recommend this to anyone looking for music to accompmany relaxing in the sun on a sunday afternoon with a bottle of chardonnay.
