Essential Collection - Rural BluesSearch: Motherless Child by: Various Artists Release Date June 30, 2008 This compilation should appeal equally to the novice wanting to broaden their understanding of early blues, and the knowledgeable collector, wanting a handy compilation of classic sides. Whereas city blues tended to be sung by women, many of whom became famous with volume record sales, the rural blues was almost exclusively a male preserve, and was harvested by mobile recording units travelling to the southern states. Given that and the greater rarity of the original 78s, the sound quality on this 2-CD set is understandably varied, with some tracks suffering from surface noise. Avid is to be commended for making available the work of fifty bluesmen at such a budget price, but I wish more recording detail had been provided |
