Janácek: Glagolitic Mass

Janacek's music is extremely post-stravinskian with yet a constant reference to an old Slavonic tradition. The introduction is powerfully dominated by the wind instruments but is kind of dubitative, suspended, sad even, unsure for sure. The Kyrie reestablishes vibrant optimism. The soprano takes us into this mood and when the Gloria comes, neurotic, escaping an invisible and un-understandable danger, when it turns into a chase or maybe a procession rhythmically pushed forward by percussions and strings, we try to forget the choir that sounds more menacing than the solace of a great mass of helpful souls. The Sorcerer has been a much neglected opera, so this recording is a real treat. With superb singing from John Reed and Valerie Masterton, it is also a tribute to those great D'Oyly Carte singers who are sadly no longer with us; Donald Adams can never be anything but brilliant,and Alan Styler sounds better than he ever has - very poignant as this recording was made just a few years before his untimely death.
I had not heard The Zoo before, but greatly enjoyed it; Kenneth Sandford as always has such a delightful, expressive voice, and the late Meston Reid was a very fine tenor with a good tone and diction.
This cd is well worth adding to ones G&S collection

Tippett: A Child of our Time

For many, this is the most moving oratorio ever written - not just because its principal subject matter is so emotive, but because musically and philosophically, it is a work of immense spirituality.

Tippett wrote his own libretto. One that, with searing insight, forces us to face the 'shadow' (the dark side) of humanity and recognise the 'glory of light'.

I cannot listen to this work now without being moved to tears at least twice; every time when the incarcerated teenager screams to his desperate mother: 'I will defy the world to reach you!'.
