Issued in late 1969, "Fat Mandolin" was Johnny Young's sole LP on the now legendary UK cult label Blue Horizon. This CD is based around that album. Listed at £80 or more in most price guides, I've only ever seen one original copy of the LP in the 15 years I've been mail-ordering rare records. "Fat Mandolin" (Blue Horizon 7-63852) was reviewed by the specialist publications in the UK Blues Press at the time, received precious little airplay, let alone distribution, and is therefore reckoned to have sold less than 500 copies! This 2007 reissue finally gives this legendary and expensive rarity a full-on CD remix & remaster and adds on four previously unreleased tracks from the album sessions bumping its 12-track run up to 16.

This is without a doubt the best White Stripes album. Where as elephant recieved much critical acclaim and gave them the success they earned, this album seems to not start where elephant left off. The White Stripes prove with this album that they are not a one trick pony. Instead of making another classic modern guitar album like elephant, they decide to make an album mainly of songs on paino and other random instruments.

Another day, another peculiarly addictive single from Jack and the always luscious Meg. This time on white vinyl, but sadly, sans stripes.

As with most of the new material it's piano drive but underpinned by Megs primal percussion, topped off with Jacks new quasi falsetto.

Flip it over for a live version of "Same Boy You've Always Known" from that live show in Brazil MTV keep showing. The one where the cameraman keeps on cutting Meg off. Git. Unremarkable but a pleasant enough curio.

I can't say anything bad about this single. There were no obvious second singles on the album so whatever they release is going to get mixed reviews.

The pretend fans that enjoyed the accessibility of 7-nation army just won't get it. The real fans who have woken up to what this band are about will love it and have been singing along for weeks.

However, I urge people not to buy it as it's on the album. Keep white stripes out of the charts and only let the real fans enjoy them. Never did Led Zep any harm!
