Every Beefheart is a serious lesson in life to be learned - If you are open. If you think you know it all take this record on board anyway. There is nowt more humbling.

Yet again the Ozit label release sub-standard Beefheart material. This gig has been doing the rounds of the bootleg traders for many years and I've heard better cassette versions than this CD.
Lots of hiss and for some bizarre reason it is stretched over 2 CD's by including extra tracks that aren't part of the gig. 77 minutes should fit on one CD anyway if you master it correctly.
The sleeve notes come from Magic Band member Rick Snyder, but he is not credited and his words are lifted directly from an interview on the internet.
Release Date October 25, 2004
Ozit Beefheart releases are usually poor and this is no exception - most hilariously the tracks are sequenced in alphabetical order - so the Manchester gig is all over the place and not even complete.
Why bother advertising it as a rare unearthed gig and then miss off some of the tracks? Instead filling the CD with live stuff that is available elsewhere and then a couple of tracks at the end from the Bickershaw festival?
I note with interest that Ozit now plan to release the old tape bootleg of the Bickershaw festival on CD next.
Exploiting fans and musicians is not ethical in my book
Think twice about wasting your money on this product

I am a huge fan of this band and this music, but this realese is a MAJOR diaaspointment. The CD sound quality is strictly "off the board" and is muddy with no low end clairity (bass and drums are a mess when you can hear them). Some songs sound better then others.None sound great.Bootleg quality at best. The "DVD" is 5 songs shot from the back of the hall with a cam-corder intercut with a couple of hand held shots from in front of the stage.Thats IT.If you want to hear this group, you are better off getting "Back To The Front" or stick with the original albums.

This is one of the best things I have heard in ages. I recently got hold of Mike Barnes great book about Captain Beefheart, read it, relistened to a huge stack of Beefheart and then saw this and bought it.
It basically vindicates Beefhearts choice of musician, top class, and his ability to create(I choose to avoid write as he basically gave the musicians strict instructions and examples of what he wanted in order to realise a notion that he had in his head as opposed to something that already existed) a damn good tune.
Gary Lucas and Denny Walley(ex Zappa and ex Beefheart) along with Mark Boston(Rockette Morton) and John French(Drumbo) really cook up a most potent brew. The Magic in Magic Band is totally appropriate. ... Read More:

Oh, dear, it's another Ozit Beefheart release. This means excitement at the prospect of live Beefheart, coupled with trepidation concerning sound quality.
This is no exception. This is my personal favourite line-up of the Magic Band (I saw them the same year in Leicester) and Beefheart is in fine fettle with a terrific set. Sonically, though, it leaves much to be desired, so it's a bit like listening to those old Blues 78s, trying to ignore the squeals and muffles and concentrate on the music beneath.Could it be better? I'm not an expert and would welcome comments from those who would know. Certainly the Grateful Dead and deadheads seem to manage to clean up even poor audience recordings. Couldn't the same be done with Beefheart? He certainly ... Read More:

What a joke - this is just yet another badly mastered from 1970's cassette bootleg of the unreleased Bat Chain Puller sessions.
The truth is that the original recordings were never properly mixed and only rough mixes were ever circulated. The bona fide ownership of these recordings is with the Zappa estate. There were rumours going round that Zappa's widow had approached Denny Walley to finish off the mixing for a possible release, but that has never happened.
Shoddy bootlegs like this just make the official release even less likely. The fact that this CD claims that they have the release rights under an agreement between a deceased DJ and Beefheart (a legendary recluse) are a smoke screen of epic proportions.

Out-takes, demos, radio spots, live performances and all in a beautifully presented 'boxed' set (no nasty jewel cases here)with bound in booklet. A real labour of love. Completist heaven and wonderful performances covering his entire musical career centring on Trout Mask.
Perhaps not the best introduction but then why not. If you like Don's music and haven't got it yet there's only one thing left to do.....
