This is one of the very best Chandos budget double albums. Hadley's "The Trees so High" is a hauntingly atmospheric, nostalgic and memorable symphony (with chorus at the end). Sainton's "Nadir" is, in my view, a neglected masterpiece, a work of great slumbering power and grim defiance, written in response to the composer witnessing the death of a young girl in a wartime bombing raid on Bristol. It is only 13 minutes long but fully conveys a sense of tragic despair, culminating in the defiant restatement out of the opening chords of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (as in the closing section of Shostakovich's "Leningrad Symphony" and Martinu's "Memorial to Lidice").
