Puccini: Il Trittico

from: EMI

Release Date October 01, 1999
So the saying goes. It is certainly true of Il Trittico. The first opera, Il Tabarro is a dark tale of lust, murder and revenge. Yet for all the voicence of the plot, the opera contains some of Puccini's most expressive music. The opening evocation of the river Seine is truly remarkable, a triumph of impressionism in music and there is a superb love duet between the two young lovers. The highlight of the recording is Tito Gobbi as Michele, surely one of Puccini's most powerful creations. As a dramatic baritone, he is in his element in Il Tabarro, and you will rarely hear more passionate singing. Gobbi has never been at his stongest on higher passages, of which there are some in Tabarro, and indeed in Gianni Schicchi, but the drama of his performance ... Read More:

Puccini - Gianni Schicchi

Search: Nessuno Sa Che Buoso Ha Reso Il Fiato
from: Naxos

Release Date January 05, 2004
There is something about Puccini's little comic masterpiece that makes it almost failure-proof. I've seen a number of productions that didn't seem to have much going for them in terms of cast, production and orchestra, and yet the opera always comes off. Even so, I didn't have very high expectations for this recording when it came my way; after all, I'd never heard of any of the singers, had only a nodding aquaintance with the conductor, and it came from an obscure corner of Europe. I needn't have been apprehensive. This recording is really quite good, and indeed has some quite wonderful performances, especially in the Schicchi of Alberto Rinaldi and the Lauretta of Tatiana Lipsic (who does, after all, have the one 'hit' number of the piece, 'O mio babbino ... Puccini: The Great Operas

Search: Nessuno Sa Che Buoso Ha Reso Il Fiato
by: Renata Tebaldi Mario Monaco

Release Date January 22, 2008
Although I dearly wanted Tebaldi, Bergonzi & del Monaco in these marvellous operas, I fought shy of buying this set for weeks after reading the previous reviews as I understood that these were all mono recordings although Boheme and Butterfly had been re-recorded in stereo. Eventually I couldn't resist (especially at some of the marketplace prices).
I thought I'd start with the earliest recording - Manon Lescaut from 1954. Imagine my sheer unalloyed joy when glorious Decca ffss twin-channel sound poured out of the speakers. I hastily checked the booklet and the box, but no word of what might be stereo or mono - then I looked at all the individual disks. Each one declares itself to be Stereo. Yeehah! I have hours of Puccini in classic Decca ripe stereophony ... Read More:
