great, this is exactly what i was looking for. i bought a couple of shanemac and the popes releases (((crock of gold and the snake))) and was veryimpressed with the more traditional side of the music. i came accross thistitle and thought id try my luck having not heard of any of the songs norartists presented nicely here. its a great selection, 17 tracksaltogether, of jolly knees-up, acoustic beauty, good/nice time music thatcan be played at anytime, i found it quite relaxing also. not being irish(((but i dont suppose that really matters))) or having any knowledgereally of irish music imparticular, the booklet gives a little descriptionabout the artists involved, some of whom appear more than once and theseare their interpretations of the old ... Janacek's music is extremely post-stravinskian with yet a constant reference to an old Slavonic tradition. The introduction is powerfully dominated by the wind instruments but is kind of dubitative, suspended, sad even, unsure for sure. The Kyrie reestablishes vibrant optimism. The soprano takes us into this mood and when the Gloria comes, neurotic, escaping an invisible and un-understandable danger, when it turns into a chase or maybe a procession rhythmically pushed forward by percussions and strings, we try to forget the choir that sounds more menacing than the solace of a great mass of helpful souls. It would be easy simply to list a stream of superlatives for this album, but that wouldn't do much to explain why it would deserve such treatment. First there are the extraordinary arrangements; they trip across supposed boundaries so naturally that you quite forget that the "boundaries" were ever supposed to exist at all: folk instrumentation rubs shoulders with electronica; pop tunes shift into floating, gauzy textures of sound where melodies disappear; african rhythms underpin passages of delicate piano -- just as you think you've grasped the essence of it, it's somewhere else. The Eraser is a musical gem, but it's by no means perfect. While some of it resonates magnificently, such as "Atoms For Peace", "And It Rained All Night" and "Cymbal Rush", some of the songs just sound a bit unfinished and not properly thought out. (I'm thinking of "The Clock" and "Skip Divided" - both meritable bits of music, but hardly standouts.) Spitting Feathers, Thom Yorke's first solo EP, is mostly in that vein.

"The Drunkk Machine" is a mess of disparate noises, and although it does communicate its subject matter very well, the same ideas are covered again in the very next song, "A Rats' Nest", to infinitely more melodic and powerful effect. This disc turns up when searching for works by Maurice Ravel. It is in fact a collection of traditional Romany songs which I assume has been mistakenly catalogued because the letters of Ravel's name occur in the word "Travelling"
