I was obsessed with it back then and wasn't sure if I'd still like it... Ha! It's even better than I remembered. It's a paradox, in a way the music is very dated, but magically remains utterly timeless and at times, downright futuristic, even the vaudeville jugband romp of "1999"! This is the kind of album that totally gets under your skin... and stays there. All the songs are compact little masterpieces and though they all have a misleadingly simplistic approach to melody and lyrics, (naive and childlike in keeping with classic English psych pop tradition) there's clearly more going on under the surface. Madame ButterflySearch: Never Had A Love Like This Before by: Tavares Release Date While 'Madam Butterfly' sank pretty much without trace in the U.K at the time (1979), it was and still is a great Tavares album. What it isn't however is a TYPICAL Tavares album and this fact was probably its undoing back then. So why isn't it a typical Tavares record? Simply because the songs and production sound of it are less commercial, less disco orientated, more sophisticated and in places funkier. In short, 'Madam Butterfly' is one for 'Soul Heads' and not primarily the general public. Take single 'Never Had A love Like This Before' for example, its a really cool mid tempo groover that just oozes class and style. In fact, 'Whodunit' is a great, intelligently complied collection that proves a real treat both for existing fans and lovers of great soul music. Though little known outside of the U.S R&B market, tracks like the super soulful 'Never Had A Love Like This Before' and 'Turn Out The Nightlight' are worth buying this for alone.
