This British group originally comprised Peter Moules (lead vocal), David Meikle (guitar), Howard Lubin (guitar) and Thomas Moeller (keyboards) and was called Unit 4. Before achieving any success, Rod Garwood (bass) and Hugh Halliday (drums) joined. Rather than change the name to Unit 6 (the obvious new name), they became Unit 4 + 2.
Their music was a blend of folk, pop and rock’n’roll. Their first hit was The green fields, which just scraped into the British chart. The next single, Sorrow and pain, failed to chart at all. The real breakthrough came via their third single, the British chart-topper, Concrete and clay, which was also an American top thirty hit. The follow-up, You’ve never been in love like this before, ... Read More:

Now deleted but an excellent CD which contains most of their 1964 to 1966 work. All the Decca UK A and B sides plus the 4 tracks on their hit EP and 3 other tracks taken from their 1965 1st Album LP.

Unit 4 + 2 were 2 years behind contemporary bands during most of their career, at least soundwise. Their first records in 1964 sounded like they were made pre-Beatles, instead more like the Critters or maybe the Honeycombs. In 1966 they caught up with the typical vocal-harmonized merseybeat done by the Beatles or the Hollies around 1964. And long after "Pet sounds" and "Revolver" they became a bit more experimental. But what's the rush?
I don't care too much for the first 12 tracks or so here (except for the hit "Concrete and clay"). Pre-merseybeat-but-softer-than-rock'n'roll isn't really my thing. But the rest of it is really good. This is a good example of a mediocre group evolving into a really fine band.

An essential Mod band alongside The Who, The Kinks, The Creation, The Birds, The Action, and every other band of reprobates out treading the boards at the time. Released, obviously, with Lemmy's current fan base as the objective, these 14 tracks are essential listening for every 60's fan. 'It's Alright' is a Pete Townshend composition, and by the sound of it, an early pilot version of 'The Kids Are All Right,' which The Who themselves later recorded. Likewise, 'Dandy' and 'Little Rosy' are penned by The Kinks Ray Davies, and with 'It's Alright', nestles snugly within this compilation of standards and Vicker's own compositions. Motorhead fans have enjoyed this CD for years, but with Lemmy's fame aside, the tracks stand as an excellent testament to ... Read More:
