This is an essential in any collection of Bechet. The main attraction is in tracks 5 to 12 where Bechet plays with his orchestra or the New Orleans Feetwarmers ~ both small groups with Bechet's sax forming the front line and Kenny Clark on drums. Here, particularly in "Wrap your troubles in dreams" and "It had to be you", the beauty of Bechet's lyrical sax is out in the open. And it swings like mad. I had searched for these for years. I first heard them on a friend's 10 inch LP and, together with his recordings with Mezzrow, I consider that they represent some of his best work.
Tracks 1 to 4, with Claude Luter and his orchestra, are rescued by Bechet's interjections but although the rest (Tracks 13 to 18) jog along cheerfully without ... Read More:
