Search: Night Boat To Cairo

Release Date May 09, 2005
When I read the title, I thought; 'What a good concept, pick choice cuts from well-loved albums.' and then I saw a list of the artists involved, I was already compiling my own tracklisting. And then I saw the album and. . . Well, it's just another ragbag selection of tracks, compiled with no real care. Far from these being only album tracks, the majority would also come under the heading 'singles' and it seems to the compilers at least, all an album track has to do to qualify is beloing to an album, well that disqualifies songs like 'Whatever' by Oasis or 'Paperback Writer' by the Beatles which were stand-alone singles but let's face it, what songs don't appear on albums these days? The choices include the blindingly obvious; 'Bittersweet ... Read More:

Search: Night Boat To Cairo
by: Madness

Release Date December 15, 2007
By 1976, rock music had become so saturated with pretentiousness that people started to react and a whole mass of styles developed. The British Ska revival was one, led by the Specials and Madness, adopting an authentic attitude and philosophy that echoed the ska bands of the 60s. This is encapsulated in Madness early albums; "One Step Beyond" (1979) included. Their style was sometimes accused of not being truly reflective of traditional Ska, and their lyrics lacked the sense of protest projected by some other bands. There may be some truth in this, but they seemed to do so with an attractive sense of innocence i.e., they said 'hey, this is just music, music to enjoy... there are no politics here!!! In terms of song writing, Madness were probably ... Read More:

Complete Madness

Search: Night Boat To Cairo
by: Madness

Release Date July 07, 1986
The Complete EARLY Madness would be a more suitable title, since this album covers their late 70s and early 80s period only. They had lots more hits later that decade and there are more comprehensive hits collections available. But this one captures them when their music was still fresh and innovative - the ska period proper. Always the least serious of all the Two Tone bands, Madness were clearly in it for the fun as their happy, bouncy music demonstrates. The Prince, their tribute to Ska legend Prince Buster, and their theme song Madness, have propulsive rhythms and there's catchy hooks aplenty throughout the album. My favourites include Night Boat To Cairo, One Step Beyond and Return Of The Las Palmas 7. Madness were as essentially English as Ian ... Read More:

Being a Madness fan, this was an ideal album having the best songs on one cd is ideal, although they could have kept going as I dont think Madness have produced a bad track!
