John McGlinn has done some wonderful work recording period show music using original orchestrations. This antholgy features orchestral music by Gershwin, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern and is a delight from beginning to end.
The Gershwin items were recorded in New York - the tunes are familiar but it's wonderful to hear them as they were first performed.
The Cole Porter tracks were recorded in London. It's great to have the four overtures but the completely 'over the top' arrangement of 'Night and Day' has to be heard to be believed. It's a little period gem!
The second CD is devoted to Jerome Kern and contains eight overtures played by the National Philharmonic Orchestra with great elan. They are joined ... Read More:
