Personally, maybe its because I didn't have amazingly high expectations for this album, but after several plays... all I can say is I'm almost completely blown away! So why 4 stars I hear you say... 38 minutes is why.

Apart from the fact that this is genuinely a well put together piece of classical magic, it is a true return to form for Amel and once again all I can say is "Thank you very very much"

Fave tracks (in absolutely no particular order) Gills & Tails, No One Else, Unanswered Question and Morning.

Janácek - The Makropulos Case

It is wonderful to have such a fine recording of this opera in the English language. Even though Janacek's music closely reflects the rhythms of the Czech language, there is an immense gain in immediacy in this curious and utterly gripping drama when hearing it in English. And what a piece! Through his monstrous, desiccated yet sympathetic 300 year old heroine, Janacek conveys most powerfully the futility of life without end.
The tempi here tend to be slower than in Mackerras' earlier recording on Decca, which may be partly to do with getting the English words across in the opera house (this is a live recording), but this approach feels absolutely right.
Cheryl Barker is superb as Emilia Marty, and the other singers are an excellent ensemble ... Read More:
