This album offers a fine introduction to the music of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and includes their most well-known works. Whilst it is a live recording the quality is such that one would easily be forgiven for thinking otherwise.
Brian Eno said of Jeffes: "Given his individuality, his non-allegiance to any particular musical category, and the unfailing eclecticism of his vision, Simon Jeffes could easily be marginalised as an English eccentric - and thus sort of overlooked.". Jeffes, who died in 1997, may well have been an eccentric but as this recording shows, he was one of the highest calibre, of the greatest talent.
Put simply this is music which by its very existence makes the world a better place. I cannot commend ... Read More:

I bought the box set aswell as the the single c.d 'a brief history' and to be honest I think that anyone unfamiliar would be better off buying 'Brief History' first because it has all the famous tracks on.
If you know their music then it would be a good idea to buy the single c.d 'Brief History' aswell as the 'History' box set.
The remastering is top notch.
My only criticism is that it's a little heavy on the live tracks.

This was the last studio album from Simon Jeffes and his amazing friends before he died. In my view, this is the best album by the PCO -- the influences range from classical to folk, and the tunes range from foot stamping folky style tunes through to slow, atmospheric songs with a bit of a blues and jazz thrown in for good measure. Some of it is incredibly beautiful. This is one of those CDs that makes me go back to track 1 when I've finished for another listen.

Found this gem while looking for something else entirely. The Penguin Café are new to me - but not their music. You'll recognise Telephone and Rubber Band from a well known advert and I've heard Music for a Found Harmonium a thousand times without knowing who it was by.
This is a wonderful compilation and a great introduction to PCO's music, some tracks date back to 1976 but it includes a great 1996 ORB remix Pandaharmonium.
The PCO was the brainchild of the English composer and multi-instrumentalist Simon Jeffes (1949-1997). You can read more about this fascinating band on www.penguincafe.com but the music speaks for itself.

I recently uploaded ths CD to my i-pod. It says a lot that under Genre it could only come up with Unclassifiable. This is neither classical nor pop; dance not easy listening. It's a beautiful collection of melody and emotion, in equal parts drawn from the charts (Royksopp, Badly Drawn Boy and Super Furry Animals), the cinema (Midnight cowboy, Star Wars, The Last Emperor) Classical (Evelyn Glennie, Arvo Part, Isao Tomita) electronica (Jon hopkins Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada)and the frankly strange. But it works beautifully. It's unique blend takes it beyond a compilation and it becomes a truly original CD in its own right.
