I bought this originally because I wanted her cover of Glen Campbell's hit By the time I get to Phoenix, which is quite different to the original. I enjoy both versions in their different ways. Two Irving Berlin classics, There's no business like show business and Cheek to cheek, are also given new interpretations by Susannah.
There are other classic songs from the Great American Songbook here too. They don't all get re-interpreted - Susannah's version of A fine romance is more or less standard, but maybe she realised that there was no way to improve on the original arrangement.
It took a while for this album to grow on me, because Susannah has a style all her own, but I eventually realised just how talented she was and ... Read More:

This album was recorded shortly after 9 of Reba's band were killed in a plane crash, and as such isn't the happiest album of all time. However, it is packed with emotion and great songs. "If I had only known", the closing track, is a heart-felt ballad in tribute to her friends and band members, and knowing the history you cant help get a little freaked. the title track is about a woman trying to come to terms with her man walking out... its emotional and a great song.
"the night the lights went out in Georgia" is a country classic and although some of the lines are a bit cringy "Andy Wo-Lo said 'hello'" its an emotional story of woman recalling how she killed her brothers cheating wife and lovers, ... Read More:

Hip is definitely the word. I was introduced to this album by a drummer friend of mine, and I was immediately turned on by how "un-pushy" everything is. Even when the band is playing funky/syncopated material (i.e. One bad habit, Baseball) everything is very laid back... Never a note more than is needed. Great lyrics and cool jazz-informed melodies is what this record is all about. For me it's been a great introduction to the music of Michael Franks. Don't hesitate... Pick it up at your earliest convenience!
