The virtues of each are different and both more than merit a place on the shelves. The huge main role of von Aschenbach was, of course, originally written as Britten's last big gift to his lifetime lover and inspiration, Peter Pears. If this had been released in the UK, instead of as the soundtrack to an Italian cult-movie, we would all be humming the tunes nostalgically by now. As it is they are a haunting reflection of the psychedelic era. Freedom is a four-piece band of obviously accomplished instumentalists, occasionally augmented with string or horn sections (happily, unsynthesised). Steve Shirley's voice has that attractive 'Steve Windwood' quality to it and his bass playing is solid throughout. Ray Royer's guitar style has a very nice country-blues feel.
