Townsend's aim with this album was to evoke with music the feel of the ocean - massive, sometimes bleak, other times teeming with life; sometimes quiet and serene, other times violent. In doing so, he created a work of melodic metal that has so far only been surpassed with its almost-sequel, Terria - an album focussing on the Earth. The layered, symphonic guitar sound that has come to be his calling card is very much in evidence, backed with subtle keyboards and accentuated by a sterling rhythm section.
