Thomson Smillie lectures and publishes extensively on the arts and runs hiw own publishing company, The OperaBox. "An Introduction to Puccini's 'La Bohème'" is one of a series of recordings telling the history of opera and introducing works to a broader audience. Smillie was a founding staff member of the Scottish Opera, spent five years as the artistic director of the Wexford International Opera Festival in Ireland, has been General Manager of the Opera Company of Boston and the general director of Kentucky Opera for sixteen years. Puccini: Madam Butterfly [English Language]

Search: One Fine Day
from: Chandos

Release Date October 15, 2001
This English rendition of Puccini's Madame Butterfly had my rather skeptical at first. I decided on getting it for two reasons: my friend couldn't handle the original Italian and I was curious. I listened to it and there were many good things about it: Not too much was lost in the translation (i.e. in the duet at the end of Act I instead of "the night is serene" this one says " the starlight is shining"), the voices sound like it was in a studio instead of an opera house so it sounds slightly distant. Also a slight irk of mine is that the Pinkerton sounds a little too English for my tastes but that's just me.
