It is wonderful to have such a fine recording of this opera in the English language. Even though Janacek's music closely reflects the rhythms of the Czech language, there is an immense gain in immediacy in this curious and utterly gripping drama when hearing it in English. And what a piece! Through his monstrous, desiccated yet sympathetic 300 year old heroine, Janacek conveys most powerfully the futility of life without end.
The tempi here tend to be slower than in Mackerras' earlier recording on Decca, which may be partly to do with getting the English words across in the opera house (this is a live recording), but this approach feels absolutely right.
Cheryl Barker is superb as Emilia Marty, and the other singers are an excellent ... Read More:

I have loved the Lords of Acid since my first exposure to them in the late 80's. The Lords music has always been about sex, partying, and having an all-around good time. This cd is no exception. From the opening song "Scrood Bi U" (a take of " I Wanna Be Loved By You") to the closing jam "Glad I'm Not God!", the Lords take you on an aural sex journey. "Lover Boy/Lover Girl"-the second track on the cd and the first single-is by far my favorite track. For a drag queen like myself, this song is great to perform to. Another one I really like is " I Like It" which talks about a woman finding out her man is wearing her clothes, to which she responds by saying---hey, so it goes. I like it!
