I received this from Amazon UK a week ago and am very pleased with it. It is beautifully recorded and all the solo singers adhere to the pure vibrato-free style of the period. The historical orchestra is well balanced with some delectable archlutes and theorbos to the fore, and the choir is precise with good diction and tuning. A full libretto is enclosed (unusual at mid-price nowadays) with two scholarly essays about the sources used and decisions made in constructing the performance. I didn't find the sound effects as intrusive as my fellow reviewer.

All in all I think Purcell himself would have relished this performance and would recommend it to anyone seeking a first version of the opera.

Prisoner File Number Three

You really have to be a Prisoner afficianado to want to buy this. Of the three soundtrack albums it is perhaps the most interesting because it covers the episode in which music played, I would say, the largest part in creating atmosphere - "The Girl Who Was Death". You get to hear all the peices of music from which snippets were used in this (and other later) episodes. But as with so many soundtracks, it is a collection of individual peices of music, not really a cohesive whole. It is not easy listening if you try to play it as music at home.
Still, for a Prisoner fan (such as myself) it provides a valuable record of the series.

On the CD there are many classical tracks, which are good to listen to just to relax or for enjoyment. Written by James Horner, we would expectnothing but the best music from this master-mind, and so we have it.One of the best soundtracks around at the minuite, you have to buy this, it is too good an offer to pass up.

Lemon Jelly move on but not necessarily quite where you expect... and, for fans of "Lost Horizons" this one needs care. Less quirky than its hugely successful predecessor, "'64 to '95" moves closer to mainstream club music, losing and gaining on the way. Gone is much of the humorous and inherently "uplifting" feel of "Lost Horizons" that made it such an enjoyable mass appeal album, in its place is a harder edge with more drawn out, less "easy-listening" work-outs of its themes. Serious stuff then, but is it any good?

Well, first impressions aren't great - initially most tracks seem like fairly lightweight electro-rambles underpinned by some odd & often annoying looped samples. But, after a few times through, things start to register ... Read More:

Really enjoy this album!

Was reading the LJ reviews, hadn't planned to leave one then realized: no mention of the open-eye visual delights that accompany this funky soundcake. Artistically creative and synchronized with the music, a complete trip awaits ~ 21st Century Psychedelia!
