Yet again the Ozit label release sub-standard Beefheart material. This gig has been doing the rounds of the bootleg traders for many years and I've heard better cassette versions than this CD.
Lots of hiss and for some bizarre reason it is stretched over 2 CD's by including extra tracks that aren't part of the gig. 77 minutes should fit on one CD anyway if you master it correctly.
The sleeve notes come from Magic Band member Rick Snyder, but he is not credited and his words are lifted directly from an interview on the internet.

I must admit to more than a little apprehension when I heard that there was another live Captain Beefheart album being released in England.
Given that it was Virgin who released 'Unconditionally Guaranteed' I suppose that it led the way. The recent releases have all been disappointing in their own ways so I did not have high expectations about this album. But due to the lack of available material by the Magic Captain, I bought it anyway.
As soon as the music started my heart sank as it was clear that this had been recorded in the audience. Now, dear reader, let me make you aware that I was fortunate enough to be at that particular venue - a cold soggy mass of mud otherwise known as the Bickershaw Festival where the Magic ... Read More:

Ozit Beefheart releases are usually poor and this is no exception - most hilariously the tracks are sequenced in alphabetical order - so the Manchester gig is all over the place and not even complete.
Why bother advertising it as a rare unearthed gig and then miss off some of the tracks? Instead filling the CD with live stuff that is available elsewhere and then a couple of tracks at the end from the Bickershaw festival?
I note with interest that Ozit now plan to release the old tape bootleg of the Bickershaw festival on CD next.
Exploiting fans and musicians is not ethical in my book
Think twice about wasting your money on this product

I'm a huge CB fan but i'm sad to say this is total rubbish and a waste of money due to the awful sound quality and to be honest the interviews are just a time filler and totally stupid.
Dont buy it (At least Dick Turpin wore a mask)
Release Date April 24, 2000
Out-takes, demos, radio spots, live performances and all in a beautifully presented 'boxed' set (no nasty jewel cases here)with bound in booklet. A real labour of love. Completist heaven and wonderful performances covering his entire musical career centring on Trout Mask.
Perhaps not the best introduction but then why not. If you like Don's music and haven't got it yet there's only one thing left to do.....

This is an absolutely splendid release of a huge swathe of essential Beefheartian outpourings, including a couple of tracks that are unavailable anywhere else - Little Scratch and Light Reflected From the Oceands(thats how they spell it on the sleeve) of the Moon. Also, while I am mentioning rare tracks, this album has Hard Workin' Man, a track Beef did with Ry Cooder for the film soundtrack of the same name.
The quality of the remastering is of the finest quality. Kudos to the Rhino team who worked on this one. I had some of the original material on older cds and these versions are significantly better.
The set comes with a great booklet(any prizes for the biggest cd booklet included in a standard 2 cd case????) that neatly guides ... Read More:

this is GENIUS. I know it seems hard to get into but it's not really. Once you, yes dare i say it, 'get it' then you will listen to hard zappa, varese, meshuggah, like it was abba. but that is to take away from this slice of magnificent music. listen, I'm just sparing you my brothers review which will, like other reviews, indicate this as the best album ever made. For those that have difficulty on these pages, grow up. and if you want to sing along, buy clear spot.
I wanted to be cool and say i have a captain beefheart album and be cool but not actually like the music etc
