Even for those who love his music, volume 5 showed Andy Partridge getting a touch too fuzzy for some tastes.

But volume 6 found (most) things back in working order with a number of excellent new tracks to drool over prior to the release of fuzzies 7 & 8 early this year.

Whilst the format for this series has now been established (new stuff / XTC demos / cassette doodlings etc), it is the strength of the material here that made it an essential purchase for XTC enthusiasts.

"I Can't Tell ...", "Tiny Circus of Life", "Difficult Age", "Prince of Orange" and "End of the Pier" justify the entrance fee alone but chuck in most of the XTC demos and you know you've backed a winner.

this is an excellent collection, i can't recommend it highly enough. XTC have been my 'pet' band for a few years now, i could pick up an album here and there knowing that there'd be something to justify the spent pennies. taking the plunge, i forked out the cash for this set - and it's absolutely superb! i haven't heard a bad track on here yet (i'm about six hours through). the demos for released tracks sound like bona fide alternate versions rather than, well, demos. there're also instances of mister partridge's interest/inquisitiveness for other musical genres (dub/electronica/etc)possibly not visited so whole-heartedly on xtc albums, and plenty of the playfulness that turned me into such a fan. i couldn't recommend a single disc for those who ... I wanted to like this compilation. The packaging and sleeve notes are excellent. However it is the music that matters and this where the problems start.

In essence you are buying someone elses mix album. If you come from a similar place and time then all well and good, otherwise you just might miss the point as I did. Even then why the Pink Panther and Hill Street Blues theme tunes? Haven't we heard them enough over the years!

On a positive note, some of the seminal house music tracks on disc 2 deserve to be re-visited. However, what is unforgivable is the poor compressed sound quality. MOS state that the songs were recorded from the vinyl originals together with the usual LP background noise to enhance the atmosphere. ... Read More:
