I really wanted to give this cd 5, but it ain't that good. For one we don't get a few gems, where's the power of love, the a-team remix, the imperial march and the band music from the final episode? That aside it's great, David Holmes Coldcut and Cornelius are great and some nice sublime tracks are here, even the king of rock and roll has grown on me. The best surprise is The Fantastic Plastic machine, who make the most of having 3 tracks, and the most memorable, I cannot live without 'Theme of Luxury' its ace. What provides the most heartache is the fact there's not gonna be a series 2 cd, where the music is just as good, nothing has been more traumatising since the no show of the chasing Amy soundtrack. This was the first opera I ever saw live, during its initial London run a few months after the Aldeburgh premiere. I still carry vivid memories of that evening as a magical experience. And magic certainly lies at the heart of this entrancing (almost literally) piece.

From the sounds of the forest breathing in the opening string glissandos to the fairies' glittering benediction on Duke Theseus house at the end, Britten conjures a wonderful array of colours and pictures from his relatively modest orchestra. Each group of characters is given its own distinctive orchestral palette - strings with woodwinds predominate for the Lovers, the trombone fills in its fatter, comical tones when the Rustics appear, horns add a touch of regality ...
