Boult had a deft way with 'light' music,and in his long recording career pulled off some surprising successes. This is all British music, for which he was famous, so perhaps it's not so surprising, but the unfamiliarity of these very well crafted and very attractive short pieces makes this a most desirable CD, and they are memorably well performed. Eric Coates was a London orchestral player (a violist) before his career as a composer took off, and he wrote very well for strings in particular (and not all that easily sometimes - to work, this music has to be played with some panache, which is exactly what happens here). All of this comes from a Lyrita LP of the music of Eric Coates, and here it's combined with another Lyrita LP, a most enjoyable ... Read More:

Grainger: Country Gardens

'Nimbus Records' is not a brand name I've encountered before, but if this recording of some of Percy Grainger's most popular works is anything to go by, it's one I shall be looking out for in the future.

The CD contains some of my own personal favourites by Grainger; 'Handel in the Strand', 'Mock Morris' and 'Shepherd's Hey' and Martin Jones on Piano acquits himself very well.

Highly recommended.
