Each scene is beautifully crafted but the opera doesn't flow as well as it might. However, Carreras gives a fine performance. He makes something of a role that is frankly not that interesting and bound to be overshadowed by the lead anyhow. So I don't agree that he sounds hysterical, more involved and passionate. Agnes Baltsa has a voice of power and beauty. Where some just sound too beautiful and "perfect" to be a convincing Carmen (de los Angeles) and others go a bit crazy, she manages to inject the right degree of scorn and haughtiness throughout and gets it about right.
