This is the second instalment of the Stax story, although it is true to say that it represents the beginning of the story of Stax as an independant distributor of it's music.

To explain, pre'68, the labels output was licensed by Atlantic and when that deal ended, it was discovered that it gave Atlantic the rights to the Stax back catalogue - yes, all those classic tracks by the Soul greats, all unavailable to Stax. So, the label embarked on a new strategy with a new logo. Gone was the pale blue label, with the black discs at the top and in came that vibrant yellow with the famous "finger-clicking" logo.

Stax Soul Singles Vol 2 (SSS2)brings you all the soul singles from the split with Atlantic in May 1968 till the end of 1971.
The most important change in this period in the history of Stax was the reduction of the influence of the traditional Stax backbone Booker T & the MGs and its individual members as (co-)writer, (co-)producer and (member of) the backing band. In the Atlantic days almost everything Stax produced had a Booker T & the MGs stamp on it one way or another. In 1971 Steve Cropper and Booker T Jones both had left Stax. With this reduction of influence Stax had lost its own typical sound and also the edge it had over Motown and others.

Ordered this directly from the distributor (hence why I have it before the UK release date), and it truly is a brilliant set to have. The artwork is top-notch (no surprise, coming from artist Jhonen Vasquez), it includes all of the art he did for the album (including the cover of the deluxe version) in high resolution quality and is worth buying just for this reason alone.

The album itself is pretty good, though no-where near as good as YRTA, FGWSSS or Tight, but passable, despite a few throwaway tracks. The overall arrangement seems a lot better as well, with a reworked track listing spread across two Vinyl disks.

The main complaint I have is how, unfortunately the vinyl is treated as a second-hand product by the producers ... Read More:
