It's probably just about worth the extra money to get the John Hiatt DVD with his new CD, though it isn't very long.
The CD itself I'd give four stars to. On the whole I've enjoyed it very much, despite a couple of tracks he doesn't pull off vocally. It has a bunch of very catchy well-rounded songs and is really nicely produced for a change.
Note that there's nothing on the DVD from Same Old Man.
But there are performances of classic songs from presumably the late eighties when JH looked a bit gaunt, up to relatively more recent times when he looks older but better. I also prefer the somewhat later performances though they're all cherry picked good 'uns.
There's a particularly nice rendition of Crossing ... Read More:

The critics weren't too impressed when John Hiatt released "Perfectly Good Guitar" back in 1993. And it is true that the album is somewhat inconsistent, with several songs that seem unfocused and don't really hold up over time ("Angel", "Loving A Hurricane", "Cross My Fingers", "When You Hold Me Tight"). They're not really bad songs, just sort of bland, and not all that memorable.
It also features some of Hiatt's best songs, however, including the catchy title track and the superb "Buffalo River Home". "Straight Outta Time" and the excellent, melodious ballad "Blue Telescope" are also highlights, but "The Wreck Of The Barbie Ferrari", isn't quite as interesting as the title may lead you to believe. (It does have a nice, ... Read More:

I consider John Hiatt one of the most important American songwriters of the last 30 years.
This 2-CD set includes 40 songs spanning 15 of Hiatt's albums recorded for various record labels (Epic, MCA, Geffen, A&M, Capitol and Vanguard.)
The collection under review highlights Hiatt's brilliant solo career from its beginning in 1974, to more than a decade running through various styles. He went through rock & roll, new wave pop before finally settling on a rootsy fusion of rock & roll, country, blues, and folk with his 1987 album "Bring the Family." This was his first album to reach the charts.
This journey through Hiatt's past meanders through original versions of songs covered by a musical Who's ... Read More:

This album was originally titled "The Best Of John Hiatt 1973-1998", but since it effectively sidesteps his earliest recordings, it is actually more like "The Best Of John Hiatt 1983-1998".
Compared with A&M's "Greatest Hits 1987-94", this Capitol release also features material from Hiatt's 1983 album "Riding With The King", from which it draws the title track, but unfortunately not the great roots-rock of "You May Already Be A Winner" and "She Loves The Jerk". But there is a lot of good stuff here anyway (the track list is quite similar to the A&M compilation). Hiatt's tough, muscular blend of rock, folk, country and blues works particularly well on "Perfectly Good Guitar", "Cry Love", "Child Of The Wild Blue Yonder", "Slow Turning", ... Read More:
