Release Date January 13, 1997
This is a most beautiful CD. This performance of the Quartet has been around since 1966 and has always been well reviewed. I'd never heard it before, and I was captivated. The playing of the Quartetto Italiano is beautifully balanced and paced and, when the music requires it in the second and final movements, full of life and energy too. Arthur Grumiaux is the most reliable and sure-footed of violinists and he handles the quirkiness of the Sonata with complete conviction. The Trio is, likewise, beautifully played by the Beaux Arts Trio, an ensemble whose work has stood the test of time ; the work of the pianist, Menahem Pressler, is particularly good. The three works sit well together on one CD, and they are in very capable hands here.

Among Ravel's distinguished musical contemporaries was the great, but deeply conservative, writer on music Donald Francis Tovey. Tovey characterised the composer, in a rather supercilious way, as 'eclectic'. There is no denying that I suppose, and anyone who shares Tovey's conviction that the apogee of musical development had been attained with Beethoven and the Sonata Form should perhaps regard this recital with caution.
Those of us for whom eclecticism does not have to be any bad thing may, on the other hand, welcome this disc with enthusiasm. The seven chamber works offered here cover most of Ravel's creative life and display a surprisingly wide cross-section of his ecumenical and assimilative musical interests. The middle movement ...
