There are better Shankar's out there and even the real thing. However I grew up with this one. Well the vinyl version. Something seems different about the CD. I can not quite put my finger on it. It may just be that twenty yeas past.

However I still play this while writing reviews; it helps me to focus. It is like my security blanket or the old Ford pickup. It is there.

There are seven pieces each has its own personality and they do not blend that well. On the other hand it is not monotonous. The two musical structures intertwine and you are part. Do not miss an opportunity to hear utter innovation.

The Classical Indian Collection

This is music inspired by classical Indian music, as it is also inspired by Western Classical, Jazz and other traditions. For those interested in such blends and by the interpretations of East/West performers together or side by side, this may well be an interesting and entertaining CD collection. However, for anyone looking for 'Classical Indian Music', the Cd will be either a disappointment or misleading. Lloyd Webber is interesting and enjoyable music, but a CD of his musicals entitled 'Classical Western Music' would contravene the trade descriptions act, as this does too. So decide what you are looking for (there are no rules on what you should enjoy) but don't expect what the title promises.

Sitar Concertos and Other Works

This set is rather a curate's egg. The traditional raga performances are, as one would expect, excellent, and the added presence of Yehudi Menuhin is revelatory. Playing with Shankar, he adapts to the Indian classical idiom effortlessly. It's a joy to hear.

The concertos are markedly less successful. They're pleasant and inoffensive, but marrying an essentially melodic tradition to the bulk of a western classical orchestra in these instances simply doesn't work. The pieces drift along rather aimlessly and then stop, and are nice enough as background music, but don't repay repeated listening terribly well.

For the price, this set is worth buying for the extras alone, but don't expect great things from the concertos.
